Safety guidelines

Ayumu, RouteRun's AI coach, gives general information and advice about your training, but there are things it can't do. This page covers what to know to keep running safely, symptoms to see a doctor about, and what to do in an emergency.

What Ayumu can and can't do

To use Ayumu, you need to agree to AI coaching first.

What Ayumu can do

  • Make general suggestions about distance, intensity and rest, based on your runs and on data it reads from Apple Health with your permission (such as heart rate variability, sleep and resting heart rate)
  • Suggest easy runs or recovery, taking guides such as Workload Balance (ACWR) into account
  • Explain how to read the pace and heart-rate data from your runs
  • Share what research says. Ayumu may only cite works listed in the evidence ledger, and it avoids firm claims where the evidence is less certain

What Ayumu can't do

  • Diagnose injuries or illness, or tell you how to treat them. It doesn't decide doses of medicines or supplements either
  • Measure or interpret anything that needs a medical device, such as ECG, blood pressure or blood sugar
  • Know things sensors can't pick up, such as what you've eaten or how you're feeling emotionally
  • Handle an emergency. In an emergency, call your local emergency number rather than using the app

Ayumu's answers are AI-generated and can be wrong. The chat screen is labelled AI-generated content. For pain or other health concerns, talk to a doctor or another healthcare professional.

For questions about injury or pain, Ayumu takes extra care even in Auto mode (this doesn't use your Deep Think count). Even so, its answers are no substitute for seeing a doctor.

Symptoms to see a doctor about

Talk to your doctor before you start running or step up your training if any of the following apply. The American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) has published guidance on health screening before exercise (Riebe et al., 2015).

  • You have, or are being treated for, heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, kidney disease or a similar condition
  • You haven't exercised for a long time
  • You're pregnant or have recently given birth
  • Your weight has changed a lot in a short time
  • You've had ongoing fatigue or trouble sleeping
  • Joint or tendon pain is lingering or getting worse

Signs that fatigue is building up

When load and recovery stay out of balance for a long time, performance can drop and you can get run down. There's no single test that diagnoses overtraining syndrome (Meeusen et al., 2013). If several of the signs below show up together, cut back and rest, and see a doctor if they don't go away.

  • Your heart rate is higher than usual at the same pace
  • Your resting heart rate stays higher than usual for several days
  • Rest doesn't leave you refreshed, or your sleep is poor
  • You've suddenly lost the urge to run
  • You're losing weight without a clear reason
  • You keep catching colds
  • You feel low or irritable more often

When Ayumu suggests rest or an easy run, it isn't about slacking off; it's about giving your body time to recover. For more on recovery and adaptation, see Training science basics.

Reading Workload Balance (ACWR)

ACWR compares your load over the last 7 days with your average over the last 28 days. The app shows it as Workload Balance (ACWR).

ValueWhat it means in the app
0.8–1.3Load changing gradually
Above 1.3Load rising quickly

When your load is rising quickly, the app shows consider keeping the next session light, and Ayumu suggests easy running or recovery rather than harder sessions. Whether you run is always your call.

ACWR is a guide to how your load is changing, not an injury predictor. The ratio alone can't tell you your own injury risk. Even when the number looks fine, rest if you're in pain or unusually tired. Researchers have also criticized the concept (Impellizzeri et al., 2020).

In an emergency

If you suddenly feel unwell on an outdoor run:

  1. Stop running, get somewhere safe, and sit or lie down.
  2. If anyone is nearby, ask for help.
  3. Call the emergency number from your iPhone. On Apple Watch, press and hold the side button to use Emergency SOS.
  4. Tell them where you are, using landmarks such as building names, intersections or an address.

RouteRun's safety features

  • While you're running on iPhone, press and hold the SOS button on the run screen to open a share sheet with a message saying you need help and your location (when it's available). This button does not call emergency services. Call them by phone.
  • In Settings, under Safety, you can add an Emergency Contact. Medical ID opens the Health app on your iPhone, where you can set up the information shown to first responders.
  • If you tell Ayumu about symptoms that may signal an emergency, such as chest pain or dizziness in the heat, it shows a fixed emergency message instead of an AI-generated reply: stop running now, call your emergency number, and see a doctor today even if it eases. This message appears even if you haven't agreed to AI coaching, and it doesn't use your allowance.
  • If you tell Ayumu you're in distress or having thoughts of suicide, it shows crisis helpline contacts.
  • Depending on the wording, Ayumu may not recognise an emergency. Ayumu isn't an emergency service, so if you have symptoms, stop chatting and call for help.

How accurate the data is

Ayumu's advice and what the app shows are based on data recorded by your Apple Watch and iPhone. Keep these points in mind.

  • Heart rate: optical wrist sensors can be thrown off by arm movement, how and where the watch is worn, and skin conditions (Bent et al., 2020).
  • VO2max and VDOT: these are estimated from your runs. The app labels them Estimated — may differ from lab measurement.
  • GPS distance: errors get larger in tunnels, among tall buildings and under heavy tree cover.
  • Calories burned: an estimate, which can differ from the real value depending on your body and metabolism.

Treat the numbers as guides. If a symptom worries you, see a doctor whatever the numbers say.
