Battery drains on long runs
Why iPhone and Apple Watch batteries drain faster during a run, and what you can do to make them last on long runs.

Apple Watch

RouteRun uses high-accuracy GPS for the whole run so your distance and pace are measured correctly. That uses more battery than usual.
Why the battery drains
- GPS: your position is measured continuously, because accurate distance and pace come first.
- Screen: during a run, your iPhone's screen doesn't turn off on its own.
Before a long run
- Fully charge your iPhone and Apple Watch.
- On long runs, carrying a power bank helps.
- Turn down the screen brightness.
During the run
- Press the iPhone's side button to turn the screen off. Your run keeps recording. You can check distance and time on the Lock Screen (see The run doesn't show on the Lock Screen or Dynamic Island), and voice coaching continues.
- Turn the screen on only when you need it. The less time the screen is on, the longer the battery lasts.
iPhone Low Power Mode
When your iPhone's Low Power Mode is on, RouteRun may lower GPS accuracy to save battery. The map then shows Low Power Mode and GPS accuracy reduced.
Running with Apple Watch
- When the Watch battery gets low, Battery low appears on the running screen.
- When the battery is low, the Watch updates the screen less often to save power. GPS accuracy can drop and route guidance may be less stable.
- If you run without your iPhone, fully charge the Watch first. See Run with Apple Watch.
